Overall Score: 8.3/10 · Teams already on GitHub who want the broadest frontier-model picker in any coding tool (GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna, Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Fable 5.1, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Grok 4.7 as of 2026-09-28) with enterprise-managed defaults, agent-operation guardrails and usage analytics. Business/Enterprise signups reopened 2026-09-03; Free-tier users still get best-in-class inline completions.
GitHub Copilot spent the spring of 2026 retrenching -- signups paused on 2026-04-20, Opus pulled from Pro, caps tightened -- and the summer and early autumn rebuilding around usage-based billing (AI Credits from 6/01), enterprise-managed model policy (GA 8/26) and, in the week of 2026-09-22, the fastest model intake we have recorded: Claude Opus 5.5, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna on the day their vendors shipped them, Claude Sonnet 5.5 six days later, all auto-enabled. That makes Copilot the only coding tool where the newest Anthropic, OpenAI and xAI models are selectable side by side on launch day, and the agent platform underneath it (local sandboxing, OpenTelemetry export, assisted approvals, code-review defaults on every plan) is now credible enterprise infrastructure rather than autocomplete with a chat box. The costs are churn and spend: ten models leave the picker in October, a global default-on policy for new features lands 10/22, and every frontier model is billed at provider list price past the credits. The plans page listing Pro, Pro+ and Max as purchasable again is the best individual-buyer news since April, pending an actual announcement. Scores unchanged; the picker is the product.
